Detroit Green Technology Institute, HBUT

Detroit Green Technology Institute (DGTI) of Hubei University of Technology (HBUT) is a newly established Sino-foreign joint school, which was approved by the Ministry of Education of China in March, 2019. The institute is located in Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei province and a large metropolitan in central-south China. It is the only Sino-U.S. institute in Hubei province, and the only joint institute in China which focuses on training international green industry talents. It is administered cooperativey by Hubei University of Technology in China and University of Detroit Mercy in USA. 

DGTI offers four bachelor degree programs: Mechanical Design & Manufacturing and Automation, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Software Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. 300 students will be recruited yearly totaling 1200 over 4 years. The goal of the institute is to train students to be talents with global vision, international competitiveness, cross-cultural competence, innovation and entrepreneurship. Upon graduation, graduates will receive: 1) a Bachelor of Science degree and a graduation certificate from HBUT, 2) a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Detroit Mercy.

The institute offers three education models for students: 4+0, 3+1, and 2+2. If students choose the 4+0 model, they can complete the entire degree in China, and still receive a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Detroit Mercy. If they choose the 3+1 or 2+2 model,the students will spend 1 or 2 years respectively at the campus of the University of Detroit Mercy. Upon completion, all models offer students the opportunity to further their studies at the University of Detroit Mercy for a Master Degree or a PhD degree.

As a Sino-U.S. partnership, DGTI thoroughly integrates the advanced educational concepts and the excellent educational resources of the Sino-U.S. sides, implements the international school-operating system, recruits first-class faculty worldwide, and explores different ways of training innovative and interdisciplinary personnel.  The personnel training plan and syllabus jointly formulated by the Sino-U.S. parties will be strictly implemented by DGTI. In the programs offered by DGTI, the required courses and the professional core courses introduced from the University of Detroit Mercy account for more than one-third of all courses and core courses. The number of the professional core courses and the teaching hours undertaken by foreign teachers account for more than one-third of the total number of courses and all teaching hours. To ensure the high quality of personnel training, DGTI will strictly implement the quality-assurance standards for undergraduate teaching at ordinary higher education institutions promulgated by the Chinese government and the framework system for higher education quality standards formulated by the U.S. government.
